Neurologic Disease in Women

Publisher: Demos Medical Publishing
Number Of Pages: 496
Publication Date: 2005-08-30
ISBN-10 / ASIN: 1888799854
ISBN-13 / EAN: 9781888799859
Binding: Hardcover

Product Description:
Although there appears to be a general understanding that the human brain functions similarly in women and in men, an increasing body of knowledge indicates that neuronal connectivity, recruitment, and disease patterns exhibit gender differences. There are clear gender differences in genetic expression, physiologic function, metabolism, hormonal makeup, and psychosocial profile, which often modify the clinical expression of neurologic and other diseases. In addition, ethnic, cultural, and economic factors are frequently overlooked in dealing with health problems of women, even though they undoubtedly have a strong influence on the clinical course of the illness. The second edition of Neurologic Disease in Women, the only text to specifically cover this important topic, will help physicians and other medical personnel seeking information relevant to clinical care. Sections address general anatomic, hormonal, epidemiologic, and drug aspects of women's health; neurologic conditions that arise during childhood, pregnancy, adulthood, and old age in females; and particular neurologic conditions that present differently or predominantly in females.

Inflammatory Arthritis in Clinical Practice

Publisher: Springer
Number Of Pages: 128
Publication Date: 2007-11-16
ISBN-10 / ASIN: 1846289327
ISBN-13 / EAN: 9781846289323

Book Description:
There has been a revolution in treatments for inflammatory arthritis. Mostly, this is due to the introduction of biologics, particularly TNF inhibitors. These have changed approach to treatment in two ways. First, they appear substantially more effective than conventional drugs. Second, they are far more expensive than traditional treatment approaches. One consequence of this therapeutic revolution is a need to better understand arthritis and to place the new biological treatments into the context of existing management approaches.

Elsevier's Dictionary of Medicine and Biology: in English, Greek, German, Italian and Latin

Publisher: Elsevier Science
Number Of Pages: 2590
Publication Date: 2005-10-03
ISBN-10 / ASIN: 0444514406
ISBN-13 / EAN: 9780444514400

Book Description:
Dictionaries are didactic books used as consultation instruments for self-teaching. They are composed by an ordered set of linguistic units which reflects a double structure, the macrostructure which correspond to the word list and the microstructure that refers to the contents of each lemma. The great value of dictionaries nests in the fact that they establish a standard nomenclature and prevent in that way the appearance of new useless synonyms.
This dictionary contains a total of about 27.500 main English entries, and over of 130.000 translations that should normally sufficiently cover all fields of life sciences. The basic criteria used to accept a word a part of the dictionary during the development period in order of importance were usage, up-to-dateness, specificity, simplicity and conceptual relationships. The dictionary meets the standards of higher education and covers all main fields of life sciences by setting its primary focus on the vastly developing fields of cell biology, biochemistry, molecular biology, immunology, developmental biology, microbiology, genetics and also the fields of human anatomy, histology, pathology, physiology, zoology and botany.

Manual of Clinical Problems in Infectious Diseases

Title: Manual of Clinical Problems in Infectious Diseases
Editors: Gantz, Nelson ; Brown, Richard ; Berk, Steven ; Myers, James

In 1979, at the request of our students and house officers, Drs. Richard Gleckman and Nelson Gantz prepared the first edition of Manual of Clinical Problems in Infectious Disease. At the time, our aim was to provide medical students, house officers, and practitioners with a contemporary approach to selected problems in infectious disease; key annotated references supported in the text.
In 1986, with the help of two additional authors, Drs. Richard Brown and Anthony Esposito, the second edition of Manual of Clinical Problems in Infectious Disease was published and covered a list of new subjects.
Since that time, numerous infectious agents have been recognized, new concepts have evolved, and new treatments have emerged. For the third edition, to satisfy the contemporary text addressing this information, we prepared a new list of subjects and added Dr. Steven Berk to our team.
The fifth edition of Manual of Clinical Problems in Infectious Disease is not simply an updated version of the four earlier books: it re-examines some older material and explores new subjects such as West Nile virus, SARS, and Parvovirus. For this edition, we are pleased to add Dr. James Myers to the team. Every effort has been made to add contemporary references to the text to enhance the accuracy of the manual and to provide a springboard for further reading; many references are annotated.
